The "21 days to form a habit" number is one of the most successfully repeated pieces of misinformation in self-improvement. It comes from a 1960 book by a plastic surgeon, Maxwell Maltz, who observed that patients took about 21 days to get used to a new face in the mirror. It was an anecdote about adjustment, not a study of habit formation, and it was never presented as one.
The number that does come from research is 66 — and it is a median, not a rule.
Where the numbers in this calculator come from
The most cited study is Lally et al. (2010), How are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world. Ninety-six participants picked one new eating, drinking, or activity behaviour, performed it daily, and rated how automatic it felt each day. The researchers fitted curves to those self-reports.
Three findings matter for anything calling itself a calculator:
- The median time to plateau was 66 days. Roughly two months, not three weeks.
- The range was enormous — about 18 to 254 days. Some people plateaued in under three weeks; some were extrapolated to take the better part of a year.
- Difficulty mattered more than duration. Simple behaviours ("drink a glass of water with lunch") automated fast. Effortful ones ("do 50 sit-ups before breakfast") automated much more slowly, and some had not plateaued when the study ended.
So the honest model is not "days elapsed." It is repetitions performed, with the required number of repetitions scaling with how demanding the behaviour is.
The formula
The calculator above starts from a repetition target set by effort — around 40 repetitions for a trivial behaviour, 66 for a moderate one, 95 for a genuinely effortful one — and adjusts it for whether the habit has a stable cue.
Anchoring to an existing routine gets a roughly 15% discount, because you are borrowing a trigger that already fires reliably instead of relying on memory. "No fixed cue" gets a corresponding penalty. Implementation-intention research (Gollwitzer and others) consistently finds that specifying when and where a behaviour happens substantially raises follow-through compared to holding the same intention in the abstract.
Then it converts repetitions into calendar days using your frequency:
days = (repetitions ÷ times per week) × 7
That division is the part people skip, and it is where most plans quietly fail. A moderate habit done every day lands near the 66-day median. The same habit done three times a week needs the same number of repetitions — so it takes well over twice as long in calendar time. Three-times-a-week habits are not slower because you are less committed; they are slower arithmetically.

These are planning ranges. Treat any single number as the middle of a wide band, because that is exactly what the underlying data says it is.
How to use the estimate without it backfiring
Use it to set expectations, not deadlines. The purpose of knowing a gym habit takes months is so that week three feeling hard reads as normal rather than as evidence you are failing.
Increase frequency before you increase intensity. If the estimate is uncomfortably long, the highest-leverage lever is the divisor. Going from three to five days a week compresses the timeline far more than making each session harder — and harder sessions push the repetition target up, making it worse.
Shrink the behaviour to move it down an effort tier. "Read one page" automates roughly twice as fast as "read thirty minutes," and once the cue is automatic the volume tends to grow on its own. This is the actual mechanism behind the two-minute rule.
Do not count the misses as resets. Lally's data showed that missing a single opportunity had no meaningful effect on the automaticity curve. Repetitions accumulate; they do not reset. What this calculator cannot tell you
It cannot account for your sleep, your stress, whether the behaviour is pleasant, how much social support you have, or whether you actually want the outcome. Those dominate. It is an arithmetic sanity check on your plan — useful precisely because it is boring — not a prediction about you.
